In August I visited the International Aviation and Space Salon. MAKS is held once every two years on Zhukovskiy AB South-East of Moscow. MAKS 2009 welcomed over 550 000 visitors, including 65 000 business visitors from 80 countries.
This album shows you the pictures of the Flying Display. The pictures are sorted by display and every display is a mix of two different days. The first day there was an overcast but no rain. Second day in the afternoon the weather cleared and the sun showed up!
For photographing MAKS has one disadvantage: backlight. You are facing the sun almost the entire day. You can get some very cool effects like the rainbow (Su-35 photos) but in the end I prefer to have the sun in the back (more colour). There were some photographers on the other side of the runway so next time I will try to get a spot over there.
MAKS has a very impressive flying display if you like the Russian stuff. It sure is worth a visit! Just make sure you go at least two days. I've heard other photographers say the lighting conditions are very bad. I think that is untrue. Ok you have backlight but the sun is in a very high position and you can make very cool pictures. You can also use the backlight for some cool effects! But it's all worth it when you see a Su-35 performing a cobra. I hope to see that Su-35 here in Europe somewhere in the near future...
