Duxford Flying Legends July 11, the flying program afternoon

This is a sequel of Duxford Flying Legends July 11, the morning

After walking the flightline we went back to the tank museum to find a nice spot next to the runway. We had to wait a little while for the airshow to begin (2 PM). In the meantime there was some flying activity, the passenger flights were still taking place.

At 2 PM lot's of warbirds started to line up with the runway, the airshow begun.

First on the program was a dogfight between seven Spitfires and two Germans (Fw-190 and Me-109 look a like: the Buchon).

What a fantastic start of the airshow! The pilots really knew how to put down an awesome display, warbirds were coming from everywhere all the time. When severall aircraft were making a pass over the runway it was really hard to decide which aircraft to follow. The cool thing about Duxford is that when the airshow finally starts it doesn't stop until the end. Various aircraft are landing, taking off and giving a display all at the same time! During the dogfight the Horsemen took off so they could start there display when the dogfight ended.

The Horsemen flew in from the USA but not with their own Mustangs, they borrowed three Mustangs at Duxford to give a display (Miss Velma, Ferocious Franky and Big Beautiful doll). There performance was flawless! The display didn't show extreme aerobatics with the P-51 but one of the tightest formations I've ever seen! They moved just like it was one big plane, superb! One diving Mustang gives an awsome sound, imagine three in close formation...

After the Horsemen it was bomber time: three B-25's and one P-40. They started in a nice formation and then split apart for various passes.

In the meanwhile serveral Yaks got airborn, not only the warbirds but also the display team called Aerostars. The WW2 Yaks flew a wonderfull show! Making very very fast passes, pulling up hard and making a few rolls. Vortex from the wingtips proved the high G forces involved!

The Aerostars were joined by a Su-29 which was a nice surprise! They flew a nice show with lot's of smoke. After their final break it was time for the Navy aircraft. The big Skyraiders were nice to see. Also two Fury's flew a display but it wasn't that good. High and making gentle turns, very relaxed display. After the Navy aircraft the Mustangs gave a display. Now the real owners of the Mustangs were at control and they gave a fantastic display! They flew really really low and really fast! It truly was awsome to witness.

The B-17 Pink Lady took off and began her display. The display was a bit the same, showing her belly a lot. Not very spectacular.

The two Piper Cubs however were fun to watch! They flew very close-by and showed the good manoeuvrability of this fantastic aeroplane by turning it on a dime.
